The first World Cup after the devastation of the second world war saw Brazil play host to the tournament for the first time. This was a competition of shocks that saw England, competing for the first time, humbled 1-0 by the USA in one of the major sporting upsets of the twentieth century Brazil, on home territory, were considered the overwhelming favourites for the title and reaffirmed their position by thrashing Sweden 7-1 and Spain 6-1 in the early rounds of the competition. However, it was Uruguay that eventually took the World Cup crown, beating the firm Brazilian favourites 2-1 in the final round-robin group game. The game was allegedly played out in front of more than 200,000 fans in the newly built Maracana stadium. It was reported that defeat was so overhwhelming for the Brazilian officials to that they subsequently forgot to present the trophy to the winners, leaving Jules Rimet himself to seek out the Uruguayan captain and belatedly do the honours. This iconic print features a little bit of history in that it refers to the World Cup as the Jules Rimet Trophy for the first time. Interestingly, it also shows the flag of India, who were due to take part in the tournament, but later pulled out when FIFA said they could not play in bare feet.
