About Paul Gascoigne One of the most gifted mid-fielders England has ever produced, Paul Gascoigne's career has been characterised by a succession of tremendous highs and devastating lows. Brave to the point of recklessness, his progress was often blighted by serious injury, which stopped him from reaching his true potential. One of the deepest lows he ever suffered has to be the semi-final in the 1990 World Cup against West Germany, in Turin. Gascoigne went into the match with a yellow card hanging over his head like the sword of Damacles, knowing that a second would bar him from taking part in the final. Far from playing a cautious game to avert such a disaster, Gazza threw himself into the fray with his usual breathtaking audacity and the second yellow card inevitably came his way. The prospect of missing out on the glory of a World Cup final was too much for the young player to bear and the tears flowed; not the sort of tears that can be blinked back, or brushed away by a manly hand, but the full-on tears of utter despair and frustration. The abiding memory of that highly charged night was not of either of the goals which brought the two teams to extra time, or even the two costly misses in the penalty shoot-out which denied the whole England team their moment of glory, but those bitter, heartfelt tears of Paul Gascoigne's, which seemed to represent the lost hopes of millions of England fans. Gazza returned home to England to a hero's welcome and his popularity hit new heights - 'Gazzamania' was born. Own a piece of sporting history Each print is issued with a certificate of authenticity.
