1966 was a year to remember for left-back Ray Wilson as he collected not just a World Cup winner's medal with England but also an FA Cup winner's medal with his club Everton too, helping them to a 3-2 victory at Wembley Stadium.
Born in Derbyshire in 1934, Wilson's early career saw him combine night shifts working on the railway lines with a part-time contract with Huddersfield Town. A two year spell doing National Service soon followed before the young full-back was finally handed his first ever professional contract by Huddersfield boss Bill Shankly in 1954.
Within a couple of seasons Wilson established himself as a first choice for the Terriers, impressing with his consistent performances. He was handed his first England cap in 1960, appearing in a 1-1 draw with Scotland and by the time the 1962 World Cup finals came around he was a consistent starter for England as well.
The left-back signed for Everton in 1964 and he is remembered fondly at Goodison Park where he gave five years excellent service.
The highlight of Wilson's career is unquestionably his ever-present status in England's 1966 World Cup winning squad, where his solid displays were appreciated by the entire nation.
Wilson retired from the game in 1971 after short spells with Oldham and Bradford, and ended his international career with an impressive 63 caps.
