After winning Olympic gold for Canada at the 1988 Games Lennox Lewis returned to his birthplace in Great Britain and embarked on what was to be a wonderful professional boxing career. Famed for his size and silky smooth boxing skills Lewis quickly rose through the pro ranks with a series of impressive knockout victories before becoming WBC champion in 1993 after the champion Riddick Bowe refused to fight Lewis, who was the mandatory number one contender. This made the east Londoner Britain's first heavyweight world champion of the 20th century. Three successful defences followed before he suffered a shock loss to Oliver McCall in 1994 - a title he claimed back less than three years later when comprehensively winning the re-match. Two closely fought bouts with Evander Holyfield followed, including a controversial draw, but Lewis remained champion until he was sensationally knocked out by 15-1 underdog Hasim Rahman in 2001. Lewis soon regained the world title by knocking Rahman out in the re-match and subsequent victories over Mike Tyson and Vladimir Klitchsko cemented his place in boxing history. Lewis retired in 2004 with a record of 41 wins, 2 losses and one draw.
