Product Description

Details

The 1974 World Cup was held in Germany. The host nation led by Franz "The Kaiser" Beckenbauer and prolific striker Gerd "Der Bomber" Muller, won the tournament by beating the Dutch 2-1 in a thrilling final. Even thought they were defeated finalists, Germany '74 will always be remembered for the total football of the brilliant Dutch team. They were the neutrals favourite after defeating both Argentina and Brazil comfortably in the early round of the competition. The way they played was a revelation with all players equally comfortable in any position on the field. The dazzling Johan Cruyff ably backed by the likes of Neeskens, Rep and Rensenbrink were simply a joy to watch and expectations of a victory were high. This tournament will hold mixed emotions for Scotland fans. Although they were the only one of the home countries to qualify and play in the competition, they failed to make it out of the group stages. That said, they remained undefeated in their group games and held the disputable honour of being the only undefeated side at the finals. The official poster for the competition features a pastel drawing of a footballer striking the ball on a black background. The print honours a tournament that saw the new FIFA World Cup trophy awarded for the first time following the Jules Rimet trophy being permanently awarded to the Brazilians four years earlier.
