Description

About Chris Eubank As a boxer, Chris Eubank polarised public opinion as fiercely as he competed in the ring but few would disagree the former world champion was one of the best fighters Britain has produced in the last 100 years. Born in south London in 1966, Eubank endured a troubled childhood and turned to boxing to give him a sense of purpose in life. It was to prove a wised decision and he was crowned the WBO world middleweight champion in 1990 after a famous victory over compatriot Nigel Benn. He is, however, best remembered for his two classic fights with Michael Watson for the WBO world super-middleweight title. The first fight was held at Earls' Court in London and ended in a controversial points victory for Eubank. The eagerly-anticipated rematch was held at Spurs' White Hart Lane and was just as captivating as both men fought themselves to a standstill. The bout sadly ended in tragedy with Watson slipping into a life-threatening coma after an upper cut in the 11th round and Eubank was left to reflect on a painful victory. Eubank was never the same again after the Watson fight and although he continued to box until for another seven years, the fire had gone and he finally retired in 1998 with a record of 45 victories in 52 professional fights. About Nigel Benn In his pomp, Nigel Benn was regarded as the hardest pound-for-pound fighter in world boxing - earning him the nickname 'The Dark Destroyer' - and during his career he achieved the rare feat of winning world titles at two different weights. Born in Ilford in 1964, Benn turned professional in 1987 after winning 41 of his 42 amateur fights and he was soon causing waves in the higher echelons of the sport with 22 successive victories. By 1990, he was ready for his first shot at a world title as he prepared to face Doug DeWitt for the WBO middleweight belt and he stopped the highly-rated American in the eighth in what was a brutal fight. Benn was a world champion. His reign was to less than 12 months however as he lost in his second defence against compatriot and great rival Chris Eubank at the NEC in Birmingham in a fight still regarded as an all-time classic. Been was undeterred however and two years later he was a world champion again. This time he faced Mauro Galvano, the holder of the WBC Super Middleweight belt, and when the referee stopped the fight in the twelfth on a technical knockout, Benn was back on top. Sadly, it was to be the highpoint of his career. A brutal title fight against Gerald McClellan left the American blind, severely deaf and struggling to walk and the fire in Benn's belly was extinguished. He retired in 1996 after losing for a second time to Irishman Steve Collins. Own a piece of sporting history The framed presentation is issued with a certificate of authenticity.
