Description

With an incredible combination of lightning speed and controlled power, Jonathan Edwards takes a giant leap towards Olympic Gold in the triple jump at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. The triple jump World Record holder , who had to settle for the silver medal in Atlanta four years earlier, took the title with a huge, third-round effort of 17.71m, the best in the world that year. Five years earlier, Edwards transformed the triple jump and moved the event into a new era, smashing Willie Banks' World Record set in 1985. Edwards' astonishing World Record-breaking exploits at the Gothenburg World Championships in 1995, will surely be remembered as one of the greatest sporting performances of all time. Banks' record stood at 17.97m and was broken by Edwards' 17.98m jump. With two successive jumps, Edwards set two further World Records -18.16m and an astonishing 18.29m. Both were the first jumps in history beyond the magical 18m mark. Without doubt, this was one of the greatest feats in the history of British athletes. At Sydney in 2000, Edwards could finally add Olympic Gold to his World Record and World Championship winner's medal. As Jonathan himself pointed out at just after he secured the gold medal, "I thought my best chance of winning would be in Atlanta. Now here I am in Sydney four years later, 34 years old and winning the gold medal. I still can't really put together what I've done." His achievements in the sport are quite staggering; can there be an athlete more deserving of an Olympic gold medal than Jonathan Edwards?
