His debut campaign on Merseyside culminated in one of the most iconic nights in Liverpool's history. Facing AC Milan in the 2005 Champions League final in Istanbul, Liverpool found themselves 3-0 behind at half-time before producing an extraordinary second-half comeback.

With Liverpool trailing 3-2, Alonso stepped up to take a penalty. His initial effort was saved, but he reacted immediately to fire home the rebound and complete the remarkable comeback to 3-3. After extra time failed to separate the teams, Liverpool prevailed in the penalty shootout to complete one of the most celebrated European triumphs in the club's history.

The Istanbul victory was the defining moment of Alonso's first season with Liverpool and marked the beginning of a successful five-year spell at Anfield. He later helped the club win the FA Cup in 2006 and reach another Champions League final in 2007 before departing for Real Madrid in 2009.
