Affectionately known as 'SuperMac', Malcolm MacDonald began life as a full-back but it was as a prolific centre forward for Luton Town, Newcastle and Arsenal that he found fame and although he never won a major honour in his club career, he is still widely regarded as one of the best strikers England has ever produced. MacDonald began his career with Fulham in 1968 but it was as a Luton player that he began to shine, scoring an incredible 49 times in 88 matches for the Hatters in just two seasons. His predatory instincts soon attracted the attention of Newcastle manager Joe Harvey, who signed him for £180,000 in the summer of 1971. His rich vein of form continued in the North East and a hat-trick on his debut against Liverpool ensure he quickly became a cult figure with the St James Park faithful. He spent five seasons with the Magpies, scoring 95 times in 187 league games, before heading south when he signed for Arsenal in 1976. In his two full seasons at Highbury, MacDonald was the Gunners' top scorer but a knee injury in 1978 was to prematurely end his career at the age of 29 and he was forced to hang up his boots. Capped 14 times by England (famously scoring five times in a match against Cyprus), the forward was a runner-up in FA Cup finals for both Newcastle and Arsenal but despite his lack of medals, he remains one of the most revered players of his generation.
