About Nat Lofthouse
Nat Lofthouse OBE was born in Bolton on August 27, 1925 and went on to play for his hometown club for his entire professional career - making 452 appearances, scoring 285 goals.
In a career sadly interrupted by World War II, Lofthouse came to the fore in the 1950's, winning Footballer of the Year in 1953. It was also a year in which the Lancastrian was to score in the FA Cup Final but end up on the losing side to Stanley Matthews' Blackpool at Wembley Stadium. The Bolton front man scored in every round of that season's competition.
Lofthouse was first capped by England in 1950, scoring twice in a 2-2 draw with Yugoslavia at Highbury. Two years later he earned the title of 'Lion of Vienna' thanks to his fantastic brace in a famous 3-2 win for England in Austria. Lofthouse ended his international career with a phenomenal 30 goals in 33 appearances for his country.
The highlight of Lofthouse's club career came in 1958 when he captained Bolton to victory in the 1958 FA Cup final against a Manchester United side that had been decimated just three months earlier by the Munich air disaster.
Against a wave of public sympathy Lofthouse scored both goals in Wanderers' 2-0 win but unfortunately for the striker his involvement is forever remembered for his controversial second goal, which saw him shoulder barge goalkeeper Harry Gregg over the line.
That incident could not diminish Lofthouse's reputation as one of English football's best players however, and his legacy as a Bolton Wanderers and England legend still burns strong.
Nat Lofthouse was awarded an OBE in 1994 and was inducted into English Football's Hall of Fame in 2002.
