The 1986 finals are often regarded as the finest of recent time due to the sheer excitement of the competition, the passion of the crowds and the talent of one man - Diego Armando Maradona. The exceptional talent of the diminutive midfielder from Buenos Aires would steal the show in a way no one had done since Pele almost thirty years earlier. Maradona was responsible for one of, if not the greatest World Cup goal of all time in the quarter final contest against England. In the same game he was also involved in the most contentious goal in World Cup history with his infamous "Hand of God" moment to secure a 2-1 Argentinean victory. Three of the home nations made it through to the 1986 finals but only England made it through the group stages. England secured their passage to the next round with a 3-0 win over Poland in the final group game. Gary Lineker scored all three goals in that game and would earn himself the tournaments Golden Boot award. Northern Ireland and Scotland both failed to make it through to the last sixteen. Maradona's Argentina faced West Germany in the final, held at the Azteca stadium on June 29th. The Germans were playing in their fifth final, but could not overcome a solid Argentinean outfit with their awesome midfield talisman. Pundits widely argue that Maradona won the tournament almost single handily so much was the player's talent and influence. After their 3-2 victory over 30 million people took to the streets of Buenos Aires to celebrate their teams' victory.
