In qualifying for the Ryder Cup in 2002, Price achieved his lifelong ambition. He went on to fully justify his selection in scoring one of the tournament's outstanding upsets by beating Phil Mickelson during the final day's singles matches. Ranked a lowly 119 in the World Rankings, Price was not expected to put up any opposition against Mickelson, the World No 2, in the final day's singles matches. How wrong we were. With four other matches on the course and the Ryder Cup still in the balance, Price stunned the watching world with a sensational 3&2 victory over Mickelson; The Ryder Cup was now only half a point away from Europe. Europe's team was filled with breaktaking performances that Sunday but Price will be amongst those remembered long into the future. Since his first year on the European Tour twelve years earlier, Price made his way up the Tour's Order of Merit year after year. His Ryder Cup victory represented a personal triumph. His was a victory for all players who could not hit the ball 350 yards; a victory of technique over power. Following a long and successful association with sports psychologist Alan Fine, Phillip Price has one of the most succssful all round 'mental games'. It was his psychological toughness that suppported Price all the way to his momentous victory over Mickelson in 2002.
