Description

The greatest Olympian ever? By winning an astonishing five consective Olympic gold medals, Steve Redgrave has staked a claim to be the greatest athlete ever to compete in the Olympic Games. Having performed at the very highest level since the 1984 Los Angeles Games through to Sydney 2000 and taken the gold medal each and every time, Redgrave is arguably history's greatest Olympian in any discipline. Who can forget that incredible morning in September 2000? The watching British public tuned in to cheer the mighty Redgrave home to his fifth and final Olympic triumph. It was a quite staggering achievement, something that perhaps only Redgrave's protege Matthew Pinsent might equal in our lifetime. After his remarkable fourth gold at the Atlanta Games in 1996, Redgrave was adamant that he was finished with rowing and stated, "I've had enough. Anyone who sees me in a boat again has full permission to shoot me." But the draw of being the first Olympic athlete to achieve the seemingly unattainable proved too much for the big man and he was soon back in training for Sydney 2000. Four long years of cold, early morning training sessions and gruelling fitness training followed, but as Redgrave was to acknowledge, in the moments after the final race, it was all worth it.
